In today’s world of wine, there is no doubt that organic farming can make for wines with richer aromas and flavors. Organic farming practices are also better for the environment in general. Because you cannot use synthetic pesticides and herbicides in the vineyard, the “health” or “l(fā)ife” of the soil (sometimes called “humus”).?
The better the health of the soil, the greater the number of microorganisms and consequently also the biodiversity of the vineyards. The abundance of microorganisms helps the plants to have the right balance for producing fruit rich in aroma and flavor.?
But a lot of people don’t realize that fungicide is also not allowed in organic farming. And while the absence of chemical pesticides and herbicides is important in fostering biodiversity (and better wines), the absence of fungicides helps to foster the presence of the fungal network in the soil known as “mycelium” (from the Greek “mykēs” meaning fungus).?
